Are salespeople knocking on your door way too often?

Have you noticed segway-riding pest control salespeople cruising your neighborhood in recent years? You are not alone!

During the spring and summer, a number of large out-of-state pest control companies recruit college-age folks from across the country to go door-to-door selling pest control services. They equip these ambitious and confident young adults with highly effective sales tactics to capitalize on the natural fear of pests that many people have, and these companies train their salespeople with just enough information about pests to reinforce those fears.

The pay structure is usually 100% commission, and each sale puts a sizable paycheck into their pocket. Due to these financial incentives, some of these doorknocking salespeople are predacious in their efforts with overly aggressive methods and oftentimes outright lies. We hear similar stories of regret and disbelief every year. After a client is pestered by one of these doorknockers and unwittingly signs up for the other company’s services – even though they charge more money and offer an inferior service.

Trained Technicians

Worth noting as well is that most of these door-to-door pest control companies do not invest in their technicians with the necessary training and licensing for them to legally be able to treat for wood destroying insects like Carpenter Ants and Termites. Be sure to ask them if protection against these structurally-damaging pests is included in the fine print of the agreement they offer. Our technicians are licensed and trained to legally be able to treat hard to deal with pests. If you feel uneasy or pressured about signing an agreement, keep in mind, that is not normal, and you have the right to research first.

These door knockers often go to great lengths to get a person to sign up for their service.

Some of the tactics we have heard about are:

Creating unnecessary urgency in attempt to force a decision on the spot.

Not leaving even after being asked to leave. Sometimes they won’t leave until the door is closed in their face.

Greatly exaggerating the capabilities and standards of their services.

Saying that neighbors “Sally” and “Larry” down the street signed up, when there is nobody on the block with those names.

Offering to Venmo money to cover the initial service, which reeks of desperation and plays on a person’s desire to help one another out.

Making up stories about the competition.

No Perfect Pest Control Company

There is no perfect pest control company. Our company is a work-in-progress, as is every successful business. We have much to learn, and we make mistakes every day. This approach allows us to continue our growth as professionals. We completely understand that there may be clients of ours who have justifiable reasons to cancel with us and go with a competitor. After all, there are lots of excellent pest control companies in our area!

Before anyone signs up with us, or any of our competitors, we hope that they will take some time to ask themselves some questions to ensure they are selecting the best pest control service provider.

Ask yourself questions like:

How much will this service actually cost me over the course of 12 months?

How many services am I actually receiving over that time?

What is actually included with these services?

What do online reviews look like for this company?

Will this company keep my family and pets safe?

Are their technicians properly trained?

Are the company and its employees properly licensed and insured?

Take Action Against Unethical Sales Practices

We strongly recommend that all homeowners take some time to do some basic research before signing up with any pest control provider, or any service provider who is coming to your home for that matter.

On a related note, there is a case currently underway in which Los Angeles County is suing one of these door-to-door pest control sales companies for their deceptive and unethical sales practices. These same practices are taking place on front porches and in communities across the country, and I would not be surprised to see many more similar lawsuits filed in the coming years.
